Batak ethnic group consists of tribes such as:
a. Karo highlands inhabited, Langkat, Hulu, Hulu Delli, Serdang Hulu and some Dairi.
b. Simalungun, Simalungun inhabit.
c. Toba, sekiar inhabit the lake Toba Samosir island, the Asahan, Silundung, the area between the balls-sibolga.
d. Pak-pak Dairi inhabit.
e. Angkola, inhabit the area and Sipirok Angkola, some Sobolga and Batang Toru, and the northern part of Padang Lawas.
f. Mandailing, Mandailing inhabit Ulu, arrangements, and the southern part of Padang Lawas.
Language: the language used is the Batak language. In everyday interactions known several dialects, namely, as follows:
a. Slang Karo, Karo people use.
b. Slang Pak-Pak, used the Pak-Pak
c. Slang Simalungun, used the Simalungun.
d. Slang toba, used by the Toba, Humbang, Silindung and Samosir.
e. Sipiroh dialect, used by people Angkola, and Mandailing Sipiroh.
Kinship system
During his kinship system considering Batak communities in patriliniel genealogical relationships, the kinship group which is calculated through the line or the father's male relatives.
kinship group is the smallest batih family or rips (Toba), Jabu (Karo). While a large group of relatives of the clan called toba (according to the Karo). the Batak ethnic customs are still quite strong. such as wedding ceremonies, death ceremonies and so on.
Religion
Batak society mandailing Angkola and Islamic religious majority, was Batak Karo, Pak-Pal, Simalungun and Toba Protestant Christian majority. besides the two religions Batak people also have faith in supernatural beings, they believed that nature and its contents were created by dibata-Kaci Kaci (Karo) or Debata Mulajadi, Na Balloon (Toba) who resides in the heavens.

a. Tondi, a soul or spirit of a person as well as the power received when in the womb.
b. Sahala, a soul or spirit power of a person who can determine the next path.
c. Begu, is the soul or spirit of the dead.
